AGORA CoP and IPU Workshop on Common Principles for Support to Parliaments "Passengers or pilots: Are parliaments driving their own development?"
Parliaments and democracies face growing challenges in a rapidly changing world. With only 34% of citizens expressing confidence in their parliaments, how can legislative bodies take charge of their own development and ensure effective governance?
For over 10 years, the Common Principles for Support to Parliaments have ensured that parliaments lead their own development. Adopted by IPU members in 2014 and now endorsed by 78% of national parliaments, they outline ten key principles for effective parliamentary support. The first principle emphasizes that parliaments should set their own priorities, with partners providing support to achieve them.
